Interview: Smithfield’s Fan Funded Ep ‘New Town’ is a Work of Heart!

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to interview country duo Smithfield. It was a lovely summer day in Los Angeles and I listened as Jennifer Fielder and Trey Smith told me their story. The pair have been family friends for such a long time and started their duo a decade ago. Hailing from Texas and sharing such a unique bond has allowed them to withstand the test of time. When you listen to their music, you will be transported to a sound that isn’t as common in country music today, the blending harmonies of a male and female voice. The power of a male/female duo.

There have been a few male/female duo’s over the the last couple of decades, Thompson Square and Sugarland are the most prominent. There has been so much success with each group, and yet still not enough credit to the power of the male/female duo. I was able to talk to Smithfield about the power of the female/male duo and how much they bring to the table. The story telling and the chemistry they can share on stage. We spoke about how even though there have been other male/female duos, there hasn’t been as much success with getting airplay on the radio. We mentioned how successful trio Lady A has been with similar song content and the way their songs are designed to really give equal vocals to both a male and female voice.

It has been a couple of years since their last EP release, so we chatted about their upcoming release New Town and it felt like talking with old friends. Their EP, set to release June 16, is one that was truly made in a labor of love. The project was funded by a kickstarter campaign by their fans. Variety Beat is definitely proud to be one of those contributors. As such, we were also privy to listening to a couple of songs that have yet to be released. More on that below!

Fielder spoke about recording their EP New Town that wrapped up two days before the world shut down due to the global pandemic. The duo’s plan to release the new music kept getting pushed back as they realized this was not going to just be a quick shut down, but actually go on for months and months. Once time continued to pass they decided to wait to release their new music and instead release a Christmas song, which they have always wanted to do.

Now in 2021, there are new and exciting opportunities as the country begins to open back up. It finally feels like the right time to release the EP they made a year ago. The six song EP includes two previously released tracks, “Sunday Best” and “Something Sexy.” Fielder explained the theme of the EP and how each song tells a story inside of a story. The EP shares a story about the ups and downs of relationships. Fielder described “New Town” as that freshness and newness of falling in love with somebody. “Something Sexy” is about going to that next level where things begin to get very romantic. “Burning Wings” is when you hit a bump and hard blocks in relationships. It also has rock vibe to it, which made Trey extremely happy to hear since he used to be in a rock band prior to forming the duo Smithfield. Fielder continued to explain that “Sunday Best” is when you look past those hardships and love them anyway. “I’ll Never Stop” tells the story of when things don’t work out but you still have to keep going and you still have love for that person.

Since contributing to the kickstarter, I was able to listen to “Burning Wings” and “I’ll Never Stop.” I can say with confidence that there is something on this EP for anyone who has been in a relationship. The power and harmonies of the male/female duo is something that is unexplainable.

The duo will kick off their EP release with a full band show in Nashville, June 17 to celebrate the release. They are excited to sing all their own songs with a full capacity show. They are also excited to be headlining at a venue and are grateful for the opportunity to play for their fans and get back to playing live shows again after a year of not being able to perform. Be sure to check out their new EP New Town available everywhere music is streamed June 16!

The show will be streamed live on American Songwriter’s Facebook page, SmithField’s YouTube and Facebook, 3rd & Lindsley’s Facebook page, and nugs.net. This show comes on the heels of their highly anticipated EP, which is set to release on Wednesday, June 16. Pre-save/pre-add NEW TOWN HERE.

Nashville, TN (March 17, 2017) – The ‘wait’ is almost over as rising star Lindsay Ell revealed today her highly-anticipated debut EP WORTH THE WAIT will be released on Friday, March 24 via Stoney Creek Records. Produced by celebrated GRAMMY-winning musician Kristian Bush (of Sugarland), fans and critics alike are buzzing over the budding star’s debut project.

The six-song compilation is stacked with vulnerability and is deliberate in its sequence, giving listeners a front row seat to a deeply personal narrative. Opening with the flirtatious “Waiting on You,” Ell breezily croons, “I’m a July sky / You’re a bottle rocket / I’m waiting on you…”

“Criminal” then marks a cascading mood shift in an undefined relationship, capturing Ell’s tantalizing vocals over punchy guitar lines. “Space” and “Standing Here” are instantly relatable emotional stand-outs, featuring contributions from heavy-hitting songwriters including Caitlyn Smith and Ryan Hurd, respectively.

The EP’s title track
“Worth The Wait” begins to break down walls and sees a relationship come full-circle with its heartfelt lyrics and sweeping melody. Finally, Ell digs into John Mayer’s “Stop This Train,” which not only concludes the project thematically, but also reconfirms the young talent’s capacity for guitar riffs knows no boundaries.

Ell, who PerezHilton.com praised as having “all the makings to be a superstar” and The Calgary Herald lauded as “the complete package” thrives in a lane of her own as the youngest female lead guitar player in the mainstream Country music landscape. The Stoney Creek Records artist is currently performing nationally on superstar and fellow guitar shredder Brad Paisley’s LIFE AMPLIFIED WORLD TOUR. Go Inside Olivia Lane’s Self-Titled EP!

Olivia Lane unleashes her self-titled Ep Friday July 29th! The EP features 7 new songs all about love, life and figuring out your place in the world!

The EP kicks off with the song “Lighting” a song that anybody with a dream can relate to; it compares following your dream to the thunder and lighting of a storm and how someone who is driven by their dream can light up the world like a lighting storm!

“At some point every dreamer makes a choice to actively pursue their goals and along the way their will be hardships and haters but at the end of the day you just have to believe in yourself and everything else will fall into place. I wanted to write an ode to following my heart.”

Any 20 something year old can relate to the second song “Quarter Life Crisis,” it revolves around that question every one has after they have finished college and entered the real world. The question of now what? The song sums up the life of someone in their 20’s with these lines:

21 having too much fun /22 you sure miss 21 /23 nobody likes you anyway /24 can’t drink like your college days /25 what am I going to do with my life?

“The older I get the more I understand that life is crazy, chaotic, messy, funny and challenging but as long as you make yourself happy through all the chair, you should be OK…. It’s an honest tune about realizing that “ain’t anybody got ‘life’ figured out.””

“Make My Own Sunshine” is a song Lane refers to as her anthem! It is all about seeing the positives in life, despite what’s happening around us! It tells the story of those kind of days everyone has; when your phones dead, your running late, traffic is horrible. But like the chorus of the song says:

Hey, hey I’m okay / Hanging right here in my happy place / Living it up / Living it up / While the rain comes down / And oh no I don’t mind / I got a suitcase full of sliver lining / I know I’m gonna be just fine / I make my own sunshine

Watch the video for “Make My Own Sunshine” below!

“She Fits” is a unique look at a lost love. It’s about loving someone but realizing that it will never work in the end because both people want different lives. The song is 1 of 6 that lane co-wrote on the album, she says that “She Fits” is her most personal song on the EP because it was inspired by a relationship she had.

“I dated this guy for a while in college and we were both graduating. Naturally we were going to try to make a long distance thing work. It didn’t. I went to Nashville to pursue my dreams and he stayed. He met a girl and settled down with her and [they] FIT each other. She fit the life he wanted and I never would have. It’s a bittersweet song about lost love and being at peace with the choices made.”

“My Heartache” is the one track on the EP that Lane did not write but she said she recorded it because it was something that she could relate to because she had been through this emotion one too many times in a breakup.

“This song isn’t about being the victim; it’s about taking ownership of your heartache and being upset that the person you once loved is trying to devalue that.”

“There’s A Guy” gives hope that the right guy is out there when you’re ready for him. Not everyone reaches the same stages of life as the same age; some settle down right after college, while others pursue a career and get married and/or have kids when they are a bit older. While others around you may be entering these stages and you have these feelings of worry, ‘Should I also be doing these thing?’ ‘Will there still be someone when I’m ready to settle down?’ The song is full of emotion but also hope that love will be there when you’re ready.

The last song on the EP, “Keychain” is an upbeat song about getting to that moment in a relationship where things start to change and the little moments add up to the exchanging of keys and leaving items at each other’s houses. It’s a great way to end an EP that talks about lost love, high emotions, fun and hope!Olivia Lane’s self-titled EP is available at most digital retailers now!
