Dream Country takes listeners on a journey through aspirations, with songs about the stars, dreams and romance. Each track on the album blissfully describes an emotion or experience with Darling’s soothing voice, backed by a cinematic sound. Songs like Halley’s Comet has a very special undertone with comparisons to the free-spirited and awe-inspiring Halley’s Comet. The song takes you on a journey through the past, where Darling experiences her doubts and wonders where her life will take her. The lyrics describe Darling’s feelings and all the magical parts of life brought upon by gazing at Halley’s Comet.

Continuing with the dreamy theme of the stars, Starry Eyes, is a letter to your younger self with advice on how to deal with the struggles of life. The lyrics describe the sense of hope and light through the darkness of bad experiences. It is a life lesson to never give up on yourself and to keep on pushing through. Darling pleads for this younger self to “keep those Starry Eyes” and to always keep that twinkle in their eye, to become one of the brightest stars of the world.

Dream Country takes a step back from the modern country limelight with simple backing tracks and elegant guitar strums, piano, violin and various other instruments. The entire album plays like a symphony to one’s journey through all of life’s hardships and greatest treasures. Darling’s voice perfectly encompasses this overall tone of the album with each note enchanting the listener, leaving them in a dream-like state to fully take in each and every lyric. Overall, Dream Country, is a solid album that captures the spirit of dreamers everywhere and brings them on an unforgettable journey among the stars.

Variety Beat: How did you come up with the title, Dream Country?

Sarah Darling: While I was recording the record, I actually came up with the title.  I had a friend pop over to the studio to listen to the first cuts, and I remember him telling me it sounded country, cinematic.  Then the term “Dream Country” came out of my mouth and it stuck ever since.  It’s a world I’ve created.

VB: What are some of your inspirations behind the songs on this album?

SD: I’m very much inspired by traveling to places and beauty.  A lot of the tunes on my album capture the wide open spaces which have always been close to my heart.  I grew up in small town Iowa, where I had lots of room to dream.  I think this subject floats through Dream Country quite a bit.  I almost feel like I’m a travel songwriter!

VB: Typically, how are these songs written and what was it like working with different songwriters?

SD: Working with each songwriter is completely different every time.  I find that I write my best work with my close friends.  I think there’s an openness and honesty that pops out.   For example, I wrote the track “Montmartre” about my love affair with Paris with my best friend Jenn Bostic.   Writing with her is like a girls night out with wine but bonus, we write a song! My other favorite writing process was “Where Cowboys Ride.” I wrote it with Zach Runquist.  We both adore Wyoming, and literally wrote a song looking at images of golden fields and wide open skies.  It’s a mixed bag but that’s what’s amazing about being a songwriter.

VB: How does this album differ than your past work?

SD: It’s a lot different from my past work I would say.  There was a lot more creative freedom and exploring while making this project. I had always dreamed about making a string heavy record and I did it! I wanted the tracks to tell a story to the listener.  I also experimented crossing over into other genres which was fun.

VB: How has your musical influences or style changed with this new album?

SD: Not much has changed as far as influences go, but I almost feel like the pool just got bigger.  There’s a big appreciation for so many types of music.  I love seeing Chris Stapleton add his thing to country music! I love anyone who inspires me.

VB: What separates this album apart from other albums that are currently out?

SD: I haven’t heard anything like it, and that’s great from my stand point. It’s country mixed with dreaminess with a dash of strings. I did me, and it happened to be different.  I think this is good advice for any artist.  Always be yourself in what you do.

VB: What do you hope listeners take away from this album?

SD: I hope listeners dream a littler bigger and shine a little brighter.  It’s really encouraging and I hope everyone gets to experience that.  It was therapeutic for me when writing it!

VB: What are some of your future plans? (Tour, radio, next single)

SD: I will be touring like crazy this year both in the US and UK which is fun.  My next single takes you to the West.  That’s my only hint! I also have some gorgeous videos I’ll be releasing all this year from my travels abroad.  Can’t wait.
Dream Country is available Febraury 10, 2017. Pre-order here.

Idina Menzel Slays Like The “Queen Of Swords” on New Album ‘Idina’ and Announces Engagement!

Tony Award winner Idina Menzel is back with her new album Idina. Usually, debut album are self-titled, but Menzel felt the need to call her new album Idina because she says  it is “the most personal, introspective albums I’ve ever made.”

If that’s not exciting enough, Menzel also annouced that she and actor Aaron Lohr are engaged!!

The album is filled with deeply personal songs as Menzel felt it was time to get back in the studo and make an original album.

“I chose to call this album Idina because I want people to understand that I’m just being my truest self and poured my heart out into this album. This is an album about rediscovering myself, learning from mistakes, and finding the courage to move forward.

Menzel co-wrote 9 out of the 12 tracks on the album. Idina opens with a song called “Small World” which immediately sticks out. It’s one of those songs that could be sung to a room filled with 5 people or a stadium full of people and still be just as powerful. Wicked fans will also love this song, not only because is might be reminiscent of the song “Defying Gravity” but because of it’s similar message of being independent and being your true self, which is the inspiration of the entire album.

I’m standing in a field / My feet lift off the ground / No one here will see me / No one will hurt me now / I’m brushing off the rain / While climbing through the clouds / Nobody can see me / No one can hurt me now / Goodbye gravity / Goodbye enemies / I’m going up to a place / Where the world is small / Where I can fly above it all / If I don’t make it, sing my song / From here I’m weightless / And no stars are famous / And the world is small.

This album is filled with such inspiring lyrics that show a woman just trying to find herself, learning from her past and being strengthened in the knowledge of what life has taught her.

“Queen Of Swords” also sticks out with it’s fast beats and quick lyrics that make you want to stand on top of a mountain and shout them to the world.

There’s no way I’m holding back anymore / I’m slaying like the queen of swords / I’m slaying like the queen of swords / I can be delicate as a flower / Or a warrior on a throne / Isn’t life for us to  devour / Even if we do it alone /  When I look into the future / And see my story in the cards / Somedays it’s hard and the truth hurts / But I’d never trade my broken heart…. Gonna live to seize the moment / Leaving nothing left unsaid / I am standing here wide open / This queen has no regrets

Things slow down with “I See You” but it’s a song that lets people know they aren’t alone even when they are going through horrible times. It’s also a song a lot of fans will connect to Menzel on as they get a sense of her talking directly to them.

Here’s to the lonely / To the broken-hearted / I want you to know I feel your pain / Here’s to the hapless / The almost forgotten / To those who got lost along the way I see you / I see you

Although we get a sense of what Menzel must have been feeling while going through a divorce, we also get the hope she feels with new love in her life and the joy that brings in the song “Everybody Knows.”

Menzel has fun with the story of “Jack and Jill” and putting a new twist on it in which people can’t always give the perfect story with a “textbook happy ending.”

Co-writing most of the songs on the album really makes the songs feel meaningful. When an artist connects to the words, listeners can feel that and then they connect as well. Thank you Idina, for your courage in making this album and saying what you needed to say. Congratulations on all your hard work and best wishes for a happy Marriage!!!!

Album Review: Jason Aldean Releases 7th Album ‘They Don’t Know’

Comin’ to get some of what you got / Girl I’m comin’ in hot / I’m comin’ in hot is part of the chorus of one of Jason Aldean‘s new songs “Comin’ In Hot” and the lyrics reflects his new album They Don’t Know.

The album which dropped on September 9th, is the 7th studio album from the Georgia born superstar. Aldean is known for pushing the boundaries of country music and returns to his roots on this album. The power chords of the guitar make their return on  They Don’t Know after being absent for the majority of his last album Old Boots New Dirt. They Don’t Know blends Aldean’s new sound with his old sound. The title track “They Don’t Know” is reminiscence of his early work such as “Amarillo Sky” and “Hicktown” the song is about being proud of where you came from even if it is a small farming town.

The album also features a surprising duet; Kelsea Ballerini joins Aldean on the song “First Time Again.” The song is about a lost love and looking back on the relationship as you see the person with someone new. Aldean tells Sounds Like Nashville about how he chose Ballerini to sing with him on the song. It was hearing her #1 song “Peter Pan” on the radio that sealed the deal for him!

“Honestly, with that song, we were looking for somebody to possibly do this duet with, and Kelsea Ballerini’s name came up, Really, it was when I heard the song she has out now, the “Peter Pan” song, that I started to listen to her voice and go, ‘All right, well I haven’t really heard her sing like that yet,’ so that was when it caught my attention.”

While some of the album returns to Aldean’s original sound, there is also some songs that reflect a newer sound. Songs such as “In Case You Don’t Remember,” “One We Won’t Forget,” “This Plane Don’t Go There” and “A Little More Summertime” are all songs about either losing a love and thinking back about it or finding a love that makes you love a place you once hated which is showcased in the song “Reason To Love L.A.”

The album is also filled with more songs that go the traditional country route with a flare of pop such as “Whiskey’d Up,” “All Out Of Beer,” “Any Ol’ Barstool” and “When The Lights Go Out” which mix drinking and romance. Whether it be drinking to forget your love, or drinking to remember or to have a good time.

Aldean continues to be a road warrior much like the early days of his career! On the day his album came out and the night after (9/9 & 9/10) Aldean played  shows at Boston’s Fenway Park, where he entertained more then 60,000 fans in the two days. The shows also featured Kid Rock as well as Aldean’s Six String Circus Tour mates Thomas Rhett, A Thousand Horses, and Deejay Sliver!

The album forms a tale of love, heartbreak, and having a good time. The lead single “Lights Come On” which went #1 earlier this year is about the concert experience and the feelings you get from seeing your favorite artist live. The newest single “A Little More Summertime” is moving up the charts and the video debuted the same day They Don’t Know came out ! The video follows along with the song, about a lost love and remembering the memories. In the video Aldean has a very special co-star, his wife Brittany Williams!

They Don’t Know became the first country album since Luke Bryan‘s Kill The Lights to top the Billboard 200 chart! This was his third consecutive album to go#1! His albums Old Boots, New Dirt and Night Train also debuted at #1!

“When All Is Said And Done” and “H.O.L.L.A.N.D” are both unique songs. “When All Is Said And Done” is about being in an abusive relationship and knowing when to get out, while “H.O.L.L.A.N.D” tells of a couple writing to each other during a war. At the bottom of every letter H.O.L.L.A.N.D was written which stood for “Hope our loved lasts and never dies.” Hickman performed her single “Gone” which is currently at country radio and finished her set with a cover of “Sweet Child Of Mine,” which had the whole crowd singing along!

“Has done wonders for finding my sound, my style, and my voice. I’m really looking forward to listeners hearing my first solo attempt. I think there’s something for every one on this album.”

Hickman also continues to grow as a songwriter, performer and vocalist. She attributes it to being in Nashville saying

“The wealth of talent in this town is overwhelming. I’m so fortunate to grow amongst the creatives I do.”

Gypsy is a well-rounded album, as is Hickman. Despite this being a debut album, it’s clear from her performance that she’s a veteran! Gypsy is available for pre-order right now and is available this weekend on most Digital Retailers! Her single “Gone” is at currently playing at country radio!

Album Review: Rachel Allyn ‘Next Year’s Girl’ – Listen

Rachel Allyn delivers an honest album with Next Years Girl. It’s full of twang, rock n roll and truth. Some songs reflect her thoughts on current events affecting entertainers, females in general. It also talks about the pull of Nashville. Three of the songs on the album showcase this very well, the songs “Next Year’s Girl”  “After All (The Bird Song)” and “No Second Chances (Tennessee).”

RachelAllyn_ByChristopherVanderyajt3

“After All (The Bird Song)” is a song about a bird who has lost it’s ability to sing, something  Allyn can relate to as in 2013 she struggled with vocal problems. The song “Going Through the Motions” was written in response to Kacey Musgraves’ “It Is What It Is.” “No Second Chances (Tennessee)” is about how Nashville is a curse and a blessing.

Tennessee / Won’t you let me be / With your city of broken promises and unfulfilled dreams / Why should I come back now / After you tore me down / Don’t you think I learned my lesson the first time around / No second chances, Music City.

RachelAllyn_By+ChristopherVanderyajtNYGCOVER

Allyn wrote 6 of the 7 songs on the album, with the 7th song “For What It’s Worth” is a cover of the song by Buffalo Springfield. Allyn who is a graduate of Belmont University in Nashville is based out of her home state of New Jersey. Her songwriting is strong and insightful, with a sound that’s unique for her generation.

There are also a few love songs on the album such as “Crash Hard” and “Perfect.”  The album is a perfect mix of empowerment and romance. Allyn’s songs have a unique sound to them, they are a cross between country and the sound of decades gone by. The album is diverse, and stands on the line of vintage music, rock and country music.

RachelAllyn_ByChristopherVanderyajt2

“Next Year’s Girl” is the stand out song on the album; it is all about girl empowerment. It was written as a response to “This Year’s Girl” by Elvis Costello. The song talks about things that female performers face in today’s world. How they are forced into situations where they think they have to take their clothes off, or post certain pictures or put down other females.

It doesn’t have to be this way / We don’t have to cut each other down / We don’t have to take off our clothes / To be the talk of the town / We need to build each other up / There’s plenty of room for us at the top / But next year’s girl’s got a gun for hire / And this year’s girl’s in the line of fire.

Next Year’s Girl is available on most online retailers!
