The CMA Awards Red Carpet Looks That Stole the Show!

CMA Awards are no doubt one of the most esteemed country music awards show in the industry. It’s 53rd annual show had some pretty rocking red carpet looks, along with some of our favorite people! It’s always fun to see who shows up to present awards and to get some non country artists there! Here’s a look at some of our favs in no particular order (except for Jennifer Nettles because obviously she won).

Lindsay Ell Scores Her First U.S. #1 Song With “What Happens in a Small Town”

Three and a half years ago, Variety Beat had the honor of interviewing up and coming artist, Lindsay Ell during CMA Fest. We have been fans of Ell before this and requested an interview be set up during the biggest Country Music Festival! The perfect opportunity to tell other country music listeners about one of our favorite acts!

Ell has many unique talents that set her apart from other women in the music industry. Not only does she play guitar (which many females also do), but she shreds guitars! Her guitar skills have been praised by others in the music industry including Brad Paisley (who has also taken her out on the road for several dates), Keith Urban and more!

Hailing from Canada, Ell has been the reciepient of some awards from her home country and that has finally started to trickle over to the USA. Ell had her first ACM nomination in 2019 and she has now scored her first #1 song with “What Happens in a Small Town” along with Brantley Gilbert.

The single was released in December 2018 and it has at last made it’s way to its rightful place of #1. Gilbert has four previous #1 songs, “Town” marks his first return since 2014. While this is Ell’s first time to reach a #1 in the US, she scored her first #1 song in Canada back in 2018 with her own song “Criminal.” It was the first time a Canadian solo female artist reached #1 since 2008! No small feat.

Ell released her first full length album with Stoney Creek Records “The Project” in 2017 where it debuted at #4 on the US Country chart. She has been songwriting since she was ten-years-old and has two previous albums released in Canada before her country music debut.

Ell has taken the time to hone in on her craft and discover herself at the urging of mentor and Sugarland member, Kristian Bush. She recorded and released a cover album of her favorite John Mayer album, (The Continuum) called The Continuum Project. Ell will be ending up her touring for the year in California with a string of shows! We are excited to see her perform!

Ell took to Facebook live to talk about getting her first U.S. #1 and also talk about her new single “I Don’t Love You” the first song off her next album that she is working on! It’s available now!!! Take a listen below!!

Spring Has Sprung at ACM Awards!

The biggest night in country music gave us plenty to talk about at the water cooler this week. The performances were on fire, (some literally, like Miranda Lambert) they had us singing along, dancing, laughing, and even tearing up. Reba was the “Hostess with the mostest” as she delivered some zingers throughout the night and laid down some truths about women in the industry.

Speaking of zingers, how about this truth bomb from Reese Witherspoon.

It may be hard out there for a female country artist, but boy do they look good doing it! The red carpet and stage were filled with looks we loved.  Spring has sprung with the theme of pastels and bright colors, which gave us major style inspo. Check out our favorite looks below:

Kalie Shorr Is Paving The Way For Females In Country Music

It’s no secret that being a female in the Country Music industry is tough. There are just 4 women in the top 30 at Country Radio right now, Carrie Underwood, Lindsay Ell, Carly Pearce and Maren Morris. It’s harder to be a female and get your music heard on radio, to be booked for gigs, go on big tours… but that hasn’t stopped Kalie Shorr from being a part of the movement for females in the industry.

Shorr has been a part an all female singer/songwriters round called Song Suffragettes since it started in March 2014. They recently had their 4-year anniversary show, last month! The weekly writers round in Nashville features rotating female country artists and has led to 30 artists receiving publishing deals and 7 record deals! It has also led to great co-writes and songs like Shorr’s “Fight Like A Girl” which was written in response to a radio consultant saying that women didn’t deserve a lot of airplay on country radio, because they were the tomatoes of the country music salad. Thus started #TomatoGate and #LetTheGirlsPlay.

With no label behind her, Shorr has certainly made a name for herself, including being named on many lists about “Artists You Need To Know” and “Artists To Watch.” She also co-wrote a song called “Times Up” that was recorded by 23 female country artists and received national media coverage.

Shorr’s latest single “Candy” was inspired by a true story about “finding a boy that’s just as bad for you as sugar.” She calls it the “fluffiest” song on the album, but that every album needs a fun song to it. She sings:

I know you’re not forever, but you’re my guilty pleasure… boy you’re delicious, too bad you ain’t nutritious.

WATCH THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR “CANDY”

We had the chance to catch up with Shorr while we were in Nashville and one of the things we talk about is her love of Taylor Swift and how she was actually in Swift’s “Mine” music video when she was 16. She also shares a sweet story about how after the video Swift took all of the kids to Toys ‘R Us and let them pick out whatever they wanted. She also mentioned doing a cover of her song “Look What You Made Me Do” with Kelleigh Bannen and Lindsay Ell at CMT’s Next Women Of Country Music Event. It’s one of the best videos out there and highlights so many women in the industry and ends with a message to report any signs of sexual harassment.
